Stella Aline “Scrap” Gentry was born in Malakoff on July 13, 1908. She was the second child of Dan Gentry and Pearl Owen Gentry, the first child being Mary Ann Gentry. Scrap’s father, Dan, was a well-known merchant and civic leader in Malakoff. Her mother was an accomplished poet. Scrap’s nickname was taken from her mother’s niece who died in a tragic fire in Palestine, Texas not long before Scrap’s birth.
Scrap Gentry graduated from high school at Lon Morris College Academy in Jacksonville, Texas and attended Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana before entering Baylor University in the fall of 1926. She was first married to Hobart Riddlesperger, with whom she had one son, Anthony Gentry Riddlesperger. Scrap’s second marriage was to Van D. Stewart, who survived her.
Scrap died in an automobile accident in Pomona, California on April 25, 1956, and is buried in Malakoff at the City Cemetery.
