Jess Porter of West Helena, Arkansas, and former star athlete of Trinity University at Waxahachie, was named head coach of the Malakoff High School athletic teams by the Board of Trustees here last week.  Mr. Porter, who has his B. A. degree from Trinity, will also fill a place on the new school faculty in connection with his coaching duties.

The new coach comes to Malakoff, not only with the very best of references, but with a long string of commendable achievements, as well.  Last year, he was mentioned in “Who’s Who” in American Colleges as the outstanding student of Trinity University.  He was president of the Blue Key Fraternity at the college and was a member of the Alpha Chi Scholastic Fraternity.  During his Junior year, he was not only president of his class, but was voted the “best all-around boy” on the campus.

In his Senior year, Mr. Porter received the award for being the best all-around athlete at the University.  He played guard on both the basketball and football teams, lettering three years in each of these sports.  He was also a member of the university’s debating team during all four of his college years.

The new coach is expected to arrive in Malakoff some time next week to start immediately upon the organization and pre-season training of his eleven for the 1939 season.
